I wrote this while listening to laufey's new album
All of this is live thoughts + reactions when listening to all the damn songs (this is a reissue! I first published this back in 2023)
Let me be a dreamer, let me float…
Dammit Laufey you really did it again, you once again made me enjoy bossa nova and jazz after so long of being traumatised be it (courtesy of my old music teacher). I mean your first song, dreamer, is just a simple and velvety song that just screams “hopeless romantic”. While the lyrics are a bit depressing, the overall song is quite upbeat! I mean you’re basically complaining about men while falling in them #relatable.
I mean just like your other songs; it does feel like this is a call out post. Like this seems a bit of a personal attack on me. But I guess it is that relatability factor that really made me hooked onto your music. However, I do appreciate the sense of optimism, because no boy can really break your porcelain heart if you’re delusional enough.
Lovesick (if Taylor Swift and Bjork had a child)
This composition was such a big slap in the face, like I’m feeling desperation and admiration at the same time. The mixture of epic orchestra to acoustic is such a great representation of how one person’s emotions can fluctuate (unnecessarily). I do appreciate the fact that when she describes the “man” the composition makes it sound like she’s in heaven, which of course make sense. After all, when we talk about the people we long for, or in other words, lovesick, we tend to talk as if they’re the embodiment of angels. Quite cool innit?
But like woah was THIS SONG a JOURNEY. Laufey we freakin love you!
Me and you in awkward silence…
Of course, it is not a Laufey album if it’s not about her falling in love with another man she talked to like 24 hours ago. Like she’s really relatable that way. Bossa Nova is of course her forte and almost every song she does in that genre is absolutely fantastic. To put it simply, this song is a girly girl song, but don’t get it twisted, its a song for all the sexes and genders to relate to.
THERE’S AN INTERLUDE IN THIS ALBUM???
I love interludes, some of the greatest albums have interludes and honestly it sets the vibe well. Think Velvet Ropes by Janet Jackson, an interlude is not a filler song, it’s the song to get you prepared for what’s next to come. This interlude in particular expresses the album with hymns and rhythms that are familiar or parallel to the first part of the album. She knew what she was doing with this album, she wants you to buy that damn vinyl.
It’s simple yet majestic. Going straight to my classical music playlist!!!
Misty
Misty is where her jazz side really pops up and it’s that song, I’m sure even my dad would enjoy. It’s slow, simple with lyrics that are reminiscent to old Frank Sinatra songs. It also helps that crackly filter she uses which assists in the vibe of the 60s. I mean this is the type of music you hear at a cafe, but it possesses the crisp feeling of a song written in the 2020s… Overall, its kind of a slow piece that really encapsulates the diversity of Laufey’s music.
Harry Potter Music (if it was written by a sad girl)
I think Laufey’s “cho sarang” (korean for first love) is probably her best types of love. I think this song really does resonate with a lot who had their first love, or had their first relationship. While her lyrics sound like she has been with this man for years, she is however allegedly single for the past 24 years. Yet, the song embodies first love so well with elements that reminds us of “love is in the air”. Because right now, listening to this, it sounds like I’m in NYC (more specifically uptown) dancing around with the love of my life.
I also love the song has a magical element to it, of course fitting as the song is called Bewitched. Also, this is the kind of songs you really got to wear headphones to fully enjoy it. Man, I need to listen to this song live.
Bila u tido <3
“I trace it all back to three thirty am”, uhmmm okay Laufey that’s a bit creepy but I respect that.
Such a fun song, with very fun and ‘lovey dovey’ lyrics. It is those type of songs you can play at weddings, yet it is also filled with that feeling of angst. Similar to Bewitched, it is a song that you kind of just feel like frolicking, but this time in the fields of Kedah. Honestly, I’m just curious what was on her mind when she was writing this song.
Must be love (in my delulu era)
Yes, finally we have a song for the delusional and in love people!!! Haha jokes aside, it is a subtle and less “grandeur” song which utilises acoustics above all else. The lyrics does speak for itself, it is another song about falling in love. In fact, the word “I'm falling” is used within the song itself.
“Can’t think right too tongue tied” same girl.
SerendiPITY because I pity all those who are struggling with their love life rn (this is a self own)
This is another first love song, but it’s more of a recounting of emotions kind of song. It’s not straightforward, there’s conflict, there’s anxiety and of course, there’s sadness involved. However, it’s not a song solely about conflict with oneself, it’s also a song about gratitude. It’s being grateful that luck was on her side, where she somehow overcomed the challenges of anxiety and naiveness.
She’s just glad to have found her serendipity.
California girls (sad version) (reverb) (slowed down)
Damn this is a song for the post-breakup people, cannot relate however as I have never dated (idk if this is a good or bad thing). I love the fact that this song is essentially her reconciling with herself and the reality she is in. She’s fighting not only her feelings but also her supposed lover. She knows she has hurt so much, yet she feels as if the blame is on her. She’s trying her best to leave a past that has haunted her and which had scarred her emotionally.
Why, just why can’t she go back to a time where she had fallen in love with him? Why did he had to love someone else? Why did he had to leave california and her for this one girl? Was she not enough? How is this fair. Man… even I don’t know how to answer that.
Fromis_9 but if they became alternative jazz kpop group
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Laufey album if there isn’t a post-breakup song. However, I’d argue this isn’t just a song about breaking up. Perhaps it’s a song about realising you have no opportunity with the person you love. Regardless, it is a song about preserving through tough times, fighting the temptation to fall in love again…
“It hurts to be something, it’s worse to be nothing with you” - really embodies the feeling of obsession. We know it’s wrong to be in love with someone who is “off limits”, yet it’s so hard to not fall ill to the temptations.
I mean in the end she still broke the promise lol (but with another man).
Second Best? The other woman by LDR, if it was a sequel.
This is THE song that I fr cannot vibe or relate to. Simply because this lyric is so specific to being lied and cheated upon. Thankfully, I have yet to experience this at any degree.
But yes, it does feel like a sequel to “The other woman” simply because of it represents the feeling of being cheated. It’s not a song about conflict, it’s not a song about realisation, it’s a song about acceptance. Acceptance that perhaps, you were cheated on and that you were indeed the second best.
Letter to my 13 year old self (when I was 13 I had an existential crisis)
This song felt like a lullaby, something you would actually sing to a child. It’s simple, lush and comforting. This isn’t a song written for us to relate to or find sympathy with, it is indeed a letter to her 13 year old self.
Perhaps we all need that letter to our 13 year old selves. A letter to remind ourselves how much we’ve learned, and how we continue to grow and learn as we age. Like if I were to write something to my 13 year old self, I would tell them to not pick law but that is a bit too late, isn’t it?
Haunted (I don’t think she’s doing well guys)
This is one of those songs which you just know they wrote this at 3 am. In fact, the whole song is probably about her being awake and aware at 3 am. I mean we all have these moments you know. At 3 AM, you’re dehydrated, probably cold and has sniffles in your nose, yet that’s not on your mind at all. Rather, you’re thinking about them, savouring your experiences with them.
